The infographic displays the top 9 most densely populated countries whose lands are larger than 500 km2. The data are taken from Countries By Density 2021 on World Population Review.
Most Populous ≠ Most Densely Populated
China and India are the top two most populous countries in the world, as we all might have learnt in geography class in school. When it comes to density, however, the size of the country matters more. This is why tiny territories, such as Macau (30 km2) and Gibraltar (6 km2), predominate the top part of the original rankings.
In this infographic, we look at countries/territories with areas larger than 500 km2.
#1 – Singapore
Singapore ranks the first with a density of 8,305/km². The country has a population of 5,896,686 with an area of 710 km².
#2 – Hong Kong
A total of 7,552,810 people reside in the land of 1,104 km². The density of Hong Kong is 6,841/km², slightly less crowded than in Singapore.
#3 – Bahrain
The third most densely populated country is Bahrain, in the Middle East. The population of the country is rather small; 1,748,296 people live in a relatively small area of 765 km². This gives the density of 2,285/km².
