“Get the Jab, Do the Right Thing!” Said Every Day
Never before have we heard so much talk of vaccination. Many of us might not even remember the last time we got a jab in the pre-COVID-19 era. Today vaccination is the hot topic. For instance dose shortage, rollout schedule, new vaccination hubs, and so on. People are queuing up to roll up their sleeve as authorities emphasize the importance of immunization. However, vaccines have traditionally never been blockbuster drugs for pharma. In other words, vaccine sales are consistently lower than other drugs, despite its time-and-money-consuming development process. It typically takes around 10 years with a cost of $500 million to develop a vaccine. Nevertheless, only one vaccine appeared in the top 15 most selling drugs in 2020, as is shown in the visual content above.
COVID-19, the Game Changer : Vaccines to Be Blockbuster Drugs
Then the COVID happened. People were forced into prolonged uncertainty until vaccination started in the end of 2020. Since then getting the jab has been seemingly the only way out to go back to normal. As is easy to predict amid the current vaccine trend, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the outlook for vaccines significantly. As a result, vaccines are the blockbuster drugs today.
The vaccine giant Pfizer’s revenue from COVID-19 vaccine is expected to hit US$33.5 billion. Meanwhile, the other giant Moderna expects to generate a revenue of US$19.2 billion.
To give these numbers a clear idea, the combined COVID-19 vaccine sales of the two giants US$53 billion is:
- just below the combined sales of the top 4 drugs of 2020
- greater than the revenues 88% of S&P companies generated in 2020.
